The contents of this article contain pertinent information about essential oils for hair growth and essential oils for hair reduction with the validity of the information being backed by human research studies. Let’s get started!
The normal cycle of hair goes through a phase of growth and rest. Each individual hair survives for an average of three and a half years. The growth phase of hair generally lasts two to three years, during which time it grows about half an inch per month. This growing phase is called anagen. This is followed by a resting phase called telogen, which lasts for about three to four months. Usually in its fourth year the hair falls out and is replaced within 6 months by a new one.
You lose up to 100 hairs from your scalp every day and in most people, those hairs grow back. Chance are you may not notice this loss because the average scalp contains about 100,000 hairs. Some people may however experience excessive hair loss. Hair loss is a normal part of aging. You can also lose your hair if you have certain diseases, such as thyroid problems, diabetes, or lupus. If you take certain medicines or have chemotherapy for cancer, you may also lose your hair. Other causes are stress, a low protein diet, a family history, or poor nutrition. Treatments can include medication, surgery, diet, laser therapy, dietary supplements and essential oils for hair regrowth.
Professor Bahman Guyuron and co-workers at Case Western Reserve University performed a study comparing ninety-eight identical twins and found that when one twin endured more upsetting experiences she was three times more likely to lose her hair than her less-stressed sister. The professor concluded “Stress releases cortisol, which produces waste products around hair follicles, making them deteriorate.”
Another study published in the Archives of Dermatology investigated the use of essential oils
for hair loss (known as alopecia areata) and found that the essential oils for hair regrowth were a safe and effective treatment in 44% of the patients. Below is the recipe from the study for how to use essential oils to regrow hair.

Essential Oils for Hair Reduction
The normal amount of body hair for women varies. Most of the time, a woman only has fine hair, or peach fuzz, above the lips and on the chin, chest, abdomen, or back. If you have coarse, dark hairs in these areas, the condition is called hirsutism. Such hair growth is more typical of men. Many women find this condition annoying and even embarrassing.
Women normally produce low levels of male hormones (androgens). If your body makes too much of this hormone, you may have unwanted hair growth. A common cause of hirsutism is polysystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Other causes of unwanted hair growth include:
- Tumor or cancer of the adrenal gland
- Tumor or cancer of the ovary
- Cushing syndrome
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Hyperthecosis (a condition in which the ovaries produce too much male hormones)
- Use of certain medicines, including testosterone, danazol, anabolic steroids, glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, minoxidil, and phenytoin
